Book: People and Places – In and Around Historic Buda Order Here
Hardback: $39.95 & Softback $19.95
by Mary Giberson & Barbara Younts

The most mentioned subject in the book is Onion Creek. On the front dust cover is a photograph of Onion Creek where the International and Great Northern Railroad bridged Onion Creek in 1880 as it arrived in the new area called DuPre (later named Buda). On the back of the dust cover is a photograph of the Onion Creek Bridge at Cole Springs Road and Ranch Road 967.

Stores abound about the Black families coming to church in the Antioch Community from where they lived east of Buda. In the 18760 census, twelve families lived east of Buda and eleven families lived west of Buda. some of the church members held their shoes and waded; a photograph shows an elegant carriage and horse; all demonstrating how people used the crossings at Onion Creek. The race track on Cole Springs road was an important reason to cross Onion Creek and a place to celebrate “Juneteenth” (as it occurred) each year.

Other stories tell how family members fished at the low water dams built by the WPA (Works Project Administration) at both the north and south Onion Creek dams built in the 1930′s. One memory was of a Grandmother who often fished all day, each, day weather permitting. (For more – get the book)

The proceeds from the book will go to help the Buda Library and the Restoration of the Stagecoach Property located on Loop 4
